March 12: Aztec New Year (Mexico): -- Yancuic Xihuitl observed, the New Year's Day of the Aztec calendar. We often imagine time as a linear concept - a straight line running from point A to B. The Aztecs took a radically different view. Time was a force. It provided energy and change. Time was often a harbinger of miracles. The Aztecs viewed it through a lens of continual creation, destruction, and regeneration. Given the ebb and flow of life itself, we think they were spot on. Aztec New Year celebrates an ancient culture whose ideas still find resonance today. It's a date with plenty of symbolism, traditions, and celebrations. The holiday is special to Nahua communities in Mexico - groups of indigenous people who live in Mexico and parts of El Salvador. In the original Nahuatl, the holiday is called 'Yancuic Xihuitl.' Nahuatl is a fascinating language with numerous dialects and has Uto-Aztecan roots. The Nahua communities today speak a mix of both Nahuatl and Spanish. From 1300 to 1521, the Aztecs rose to power and influence as the center of Mesoamerican culture. They followed the Mexica or Aztec calendar - a 365-day calendar cycle comprising two parts that ran simultaneously. The first was the year count or xiuhpohualli. The second was tonalpohualli, or 'counting of the days' - a 260-day ritual cycle. Yancuic Xihuitl celebrations today usually take place the night before, on March 11. Expectedly, the celebrations are spectacular. Cities like Nuapan, Huauchinango, Xicotepec, Zongolica, and Mexico City organize numerous events on this day. Celebrations commence with ceremonial dances and songs set to the beat of traditional drums. Dancers come dressed in colorful traditional finery and quetzal feather headgear. Anyone fortunate to attend can attest to how mesmerizing these performances are. People present seeds as offerings and light 'ocote' or pitch-pine candles that produce aromatic and extremely flammable resin. Towards the end of the ceremony, people burn a flag representing the year gone by and perfume a replacement flag. Finally, they welcome the New Year by blowing into conch shells - the same way their ancestors used to centuries ago. March 12: National Working Moms Day: -- It's a day to celebrate all the mothers that work for their children - the teachers, the doctors, the accountants, the cashiers, and yes, even the housewives and homemakers. All of them work; all of them are role models. Even beyond their paid jobs, mothers tend to assume the roles of substitute teachers, first aiders, cooks, cleaners, and more. This is why, inspired by the Working Moms of Milwaukee organization, we support their businesses, recognize all that they do, and express how much it means on this day. Working Moms of Milwaukee was founded in December 2017 by a local mom who needed some more support. After talking with other working moms, she realized that there was a large community need for a local organization that combined several core elements: mothers in Milwaukee who work full-time, part-time, inside the home, or outside of the home; networking with other moms from different backgrounds, fields, and professions, to make it easy to network online and in person; socializing in time frames that work for busy families; appealing events that celebrate Milwaukee and encourage authentic connections, support, and sharing daily working mom experiences with others like them; blog and social media content that's relatable and useful for working moms; and an organization that addresses the needs of working moms in their community. Each year, a group of moms gets together to talk about issues that matter to moms in the community. In 2020, they noticed there was a need to celebrate and recognize working moms on a larger scale, so they decided to create their own celebration. After the interest they received in Milwaukee, the Working Moms decided to expand the celebration and resources to people all over the country in 2022. That year alone, they gave over a thousand dollars in giveaways and prizes, got media attention from sites such as Yahoo.com and Journal Sentinel, got tweeted at by celebrities such as Jane Pauly, got 5,400 views on #workingmomsday content on TikTok, and had over 60 local moms at an in-person event for a celebration. March 12: Alfred Hitchcock Day: -- Since Hitchcock was born in August, the origins of March 12 as National Alfred Hitchcock Day remain a mystery - a fitting tribute for the Master Of Suspense himself! Alfred Hitchcock is a pioneering film director who brought us some of our favorite classic horror films. From The 39 Steps to Psycho, Hitchcock developed innovative filmmaking techniques that influenced generations of future filmmakers and changed the way we view horror and mystery, and introduced the world to iconic characters, film shots, and directorial conventions. Alfred Hitchcock, English-American film director, producer and screenwriter (August 13, 1899 - April 29, 1980) was #born in Leytonstone, London, England. Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock KBE is one of the most influential and extensively studied filmmakers in the history of cinema. Known as the "Master of Suspense", he directed over 50 feature films in a career spanning six decades, becoming as well known as any of his actors thanks to his many interviews, his cameo roles in most of his films, and his hosting and producing of the television anthology Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955-1965). His films garnered a total of 46 Oscar nominations and 6 wins. Hitchcock entered the film industry in 1919 as a title card designer after training as a technical clerk and copy writer for a telegraph-cable company. He made his directorial debut with the British-German silent film The Pleasure Garden (1925). His first successful film, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927), helped to shape the thriller genre, while his 1929 film, Blackmail, was the first British "talkie". Two of his 1930s thrillers, The 39 Steps (1935) and The Lady Vanishes (1938), are ranked among the greatest British films of the 20th century. By 1939, Hitchcock was a filmmaker of international importance, and film producer David O. Selznick persuaded him to move to Hollywood. A string of successful films followed, including Rebecca (1940), Foreign Correspondent (1940), Suspicion (1941), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), and Notorious (1946). Rebecca won the Academy Award for Best Picture, although Hitchcock himself was only nominated as Best Director; he was also nominated for Lifeboat (1944) and Spellbound (1945), although he never won the Best Director Academy Award. The "Hitchcockian" style includes the use of camera movement to mimic a person's gaze, thereby turning viewers into voyeurs, and framing shots to maximise anxiety and fear. The film critic Robin Wood wrote that the meaning of a Hitchcock film "is there in the method, in the progression from shot to shot. A Hitchcock film is an organism, with the whole implied in every detail and every detail related to the whole." After a brief lull of commercial success in the late 1940s, Hitchcock returned to form with Strangers on a Train (1951) and Dial M For Murder (1954). By 1960 Hitchcock had directed four films often ranked among the greatest of all time: Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1958), North by Northwest (1959), and Psycho (1960), the first and last of these garnering him Best Director nominations. In 2012, Vertigo replaced Orson Welles's Citizen Kane (1941) as the British Film Institute's greatest film ever made based on its world-wide poll of hundreds of film critics. By 2018 eight of his films had been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, including his personal favourite, Shadow of a Doubt (1943). He received the BAFTA Fellowship in 1971, the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1979 and was knighted in December that year, four months before he died of kidney failure in his Bel Air home, aged 80. Donald Spoto, one of Hitchcock's biographers, wrote that Hitchcock had declined to see a priest, but according to Jesuit priest Mark Henninger, he and another priest, Tom Sullivan, celebrated Mass at the filmmaker's home, and Sullivan heard his confession. Hitchcock was survived by his wife and daughter. His funeral was held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Beverly Hills on April 30, after which his body was cremated. His remains were scattered over the Pacific Ocean on May 10, 1980. March 12: World Day Against Cyber Censorship: -- Facebook and Twitter, listen up! World Day Against Cyber Censorship stands to check cyber censorship blocks or limits access, communication, and access to certain information on the internet. Governments and social media companies claim to do this for security purposes but it's often a means of suppressing dissent by censoring and denying citizens their right to free speech, association, and mobilization. The internet is a powerful tool for reporting, awareness, and activism. It spreads information quickly and connects millions of people worldwide at the push of a button. We must protect freedom on the internet. Censorship on the internet is a relatively recent phenomenon. The Communications Decency Act, passed by the U.S. government in 1996, made it illegal to post material on the internet that was deemed "patently offensive" or "indecent." The majority of the Act was found to be unconstitutional, but Section 230 was not. Social media platforms, internet providers, and other intermediaries' responsibility for their users' access or sharing was reduced under Section 230. Two years later, the U.S. passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (D.M.C.A), criminalizing the dissemination of technology that bypasses copyright protection. Critics have long argued that the D.M.C.A. limits free expression and the fair use of copyright material. Another argument is that it restricts technological innovation and scientific research. The Chinese Ministry of Public Security launched the 'Golden Shield' initiative in 1998, limiting citizens' access to content the government deemed disruptive to national leadership. The Golden Shield evolved into the so-called 'Great Firewall of China,' considered the most exhaustive online censorship program. Specifications for the internet's first Virtual Private Network were published online in 1999. Internet users can now access private networks across public networks. Initially used by companies to share personal services with satellite employees and offices, V.P.N.s soon became popular with individual users avoiding online censorship and geo-restriction. By 2015, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (F.C.C.) had approved a "net neutrality" order that assigned ISPs as "common carriers" and banned discriminatory throttling or blocking. The Net Neutrality order was challenged in 2016 and survived, but the F.C.C. repealed the order in 2017. In the same year, China began suppressing V.P.N. services, making them more challenging for activists, researchers, students, and business people who relied on them to surpass the Great Firewall. Cyber censorship has increased worldwide in recent years. It's unlikely the debate around it will die down any time soon. March 12, 1864: The American Civil War (The Civil War, The War Between The States): Naval Warfare Of The American Civil War (Naval Battles Of The American Civil War): The Trans-Mississippi Theater Of The American Civil War: The Red River Campaign (The Red River Expedition): -- A US Navy fleet of 13 Ironclads and 7 Gunboats and other support ships enter the Red River, beginning The Red River Campaign, a series of battles fought along the Red River in Louisiana from March 10 to May 22, 1864. The campaign was a major Union initiative, fought between approximately 30,000 Union troops under the command of Major General Nathaniel P. Banks, and Confederate troops under the command of Lieutenant General Richard Taylor, whose strength varied from 6,000 to 15,000. The Battle of Mansfield was a major part of the Union offensive campaign, which ended in defeat for General Banks. The Red River Campaign was launched through the densely forested gulf coastal plain region between the Red River Valley and central Arkansas. The offensive was intended to stop Confederate use of the Louisiana port of Shreveport, open an outlet for the sugar and cotton of northern Louisiana, and to split the Confederate lines, allowing the Union to encircle and destroy the Confederate military forces in Louisiana and southern Arkansas. It marked the last major offensive attempted by the Union in the Trans-Mississippi Theater. The Red River Campaign was primarily the plan of Major-General Henry W. Halleck, former General-in-Chief of the Armies of the United States. A diversion from Lieutenant-General Ulysses S. Grant's plan to surround the main Confederate armies by using Banks's Army of the Gulf to capture Mobile, it was characterized by poor planning and mismanagement, and led to bitter enmity between Major-General Richard Taylor and his immediate superior, Kirby Smith, after Smith ordered Taylor to send half of his army to north to Arkansas, rather than south in pursuit of Banks, following the battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. March 12, 1890: #BOTD: #HBD! Vaslav Nijinsky, Ukrainian born Russian ballet dancer and choreographer, cited as the greatest male dancer of the early 20th century (d. April 8, 1950) is #born Waclaw Nizynski in Kiev, Kiev Governorate, Russian Empire (modern Ukraine) to ethnic Polish touring dancer parents Tomasz Nizynski (b. March 7, 1862) and Eleonora Bereda (b. December 28 1856). Nijinsky grew up in Imperial Russia but considered himself to be Polish. He was celebrated for his virtuosity and for the depth and intensity of his characterizations. He could dance en pointe (supporting one's body weight on the tips of the toes, usually while wearing structurally reinforced pointe shoes), a rare skill among male dancers at the time and was admired for his seemingly gravity-defying leaps. At age nine Nijinsky was accepted at the Imperial Ballet School (now known as the Mariinsky School) in St. Petersburg, the pre-eminent ballet school in the world. In 1907, he graduated and became a member of the Imperial Ballet, starting at the rank of coryphee instead of in the corps de ballet, already taking starring roles. In 1909 he joined the Ballets Russes, a new ballet company started by Sergei Diaghilev. The impresario took the Russian Ballets to Paris, where high-quality productions such as those of the Imperial Ballet were not known. Nijinsky became the company's star male dancer, causing an enormous stir amongst audiences whenever he performed. In ordinary life he appeared unremarkable and was withdrawn in conversation. Diaghilev and Nijinsky became lovers; the Ballets Russes gave Nijinsky the chance to expand his art and experiment with dance and choreography; he created new directions for male dancers while becoming internationally famous. In 1912 Nijinsky began choreographing original ballets, including L'apres-midi d'un faune (1912) to music by Claude Debussy, Jeux (1913), and Till Eulenspiegel (1916). At the premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps (1913) in Paris, with music by Igor Stravinsky, fights broke out in the audience between those who loved and hated this startling new style of ballet and music. Faune caused controversy because of its sexually suggestive final scene. Nijinsky originally conceived Jeux as a flirtatious interaction among three males, although Diaghilev insisted it be danced by one male and two females. In 1913 Nijinsky married Hungarian Romola de Pulszky while on tour with the company in South America. She had 'stalked' the company and Nijinsky since 1912. The marriage caused a break with Diaghilev, who soon dismissed Nijinsky from the company. The couple had two daughters together, Kyra and Tamara Nijinska. With no alternative employer available, Nijinsky tried to form his own company, but this was not a success. He was interned in Budapest, Hungary during World War I, under house arrest until 1916. He was finally permitted to leave after intervention by Diaghilev and international leaders; he was allowed to go to New York for an American tour. Calls for his release had been made by Alfonso XIII of Spain and President Wilson at the urging of Otto Kahn. Nijinsky became increasingly mentally unstable with the stresses of having to manage tours himself and deprived of opportunities to dance, which had always been his total obsession. After a tour of South America in 1917, and due to travel difficulties imposed by the war, the family settled in St. Moritz, Switzerland. His mental condition deteriorated; he was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1919 and committed to an asylum for the first time. For the next 30 years, he was in and out of institutions, never dancing again in public. Vaslav Nijinsky died of kidney failure at a clinic in London, England, aged 60. He was buried in London; then in 1953, his body was moved to Montmartre Cemetery in Paris and reinterred beside the graves of Gaetan Vestris, Theophile Gautier, and Emma Livry. Jack Kerouac died 5:15 in the morning at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida of an esophageal hemorrhage from internal bleeding due to long-term alcohol abuse, aged 47. The prior morning, Kerouac was working in St. Petersburg on a book about his father's print shop. He suddenly felt nauseated and went to the bathroom, where he began to vomit blood. Kerouac was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital, where he received several transfusions in an attempt to make up for the loss of blood, and doctors subsequently attempted surgery, but a damaged liver prevented his blood from clotting. He never regained consciousness after the operation. His cause of death was listed as an internal hemorrhage (bleeding esophageal varices) caused by cirrhosis, the result of longtime alcohol abuse. A possible contributing factor was an untreated hernia he suffered in a bar fight several weeks earlier. His funeral was held at St. Jean Baptiste Church in Lowell, Massachusetts, and he was buried at Edson Cemetery. The Salt March, also known as the Dandi March and the Dandi Satyagraha, was an act of nonviolent civil disobedience in colonial India led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to produce salt from the seawater in the coastal village of Dandi (now in Gujarat), as was the practice of the local populace until British officials introduced taxation on salt production, deemed their sea-salt reclamation activities illegal, and then repeatedly used force to stop it. The 24-day march began from March 12, 1930 and continued until April 6, 1930 as a direct action campaign of tax resistance and nonviolent protest against the British salt monopoly, and it gained worldwide attention which gave impetus to the Indian independence movement and started the nationwide Civil Disobedience Movement. March 12, 1931: #BOTD: #HBD! Billie Thomas, African American child actor best remembered for portraying the character of Buckwheat in the Our Gang (Little Rascals) short films from 1934 until the series' end in 1944 (d. October 10, 1980) is #born William Thomas Jr. in Los Angeles, California. Billie Thomas first appeared in the 1934 Our Gang shorts For Pete's Sake!, The First Round-Up, and Washee Ironee as a background player. The "Buckwheat" character was a girl at this time, portrayed by Our Gang kid Matthew "Stymie" Beard's younger sister Carlena in For Pete's Sake!, and by Willie Mae Walton in three other shorts. Thomas began appearing as "Buckwheat" with 1935's Mama's Little Pirate. Despite Thomas being a boy, the Buckwheat character remained a girl -- dressed as a Topsy-esque (based on Topsy, the friend of Little Eva in Uncle Tom's Cabin) image of the African-American "pickaninny" stereotype with bowed pigtails, a large hand-me-down sweater and oversized boots. After Stymie's departure from the series later in 1935, the Buckwheat character slowly morphed into a boy, first referred to definitively as a "he" in 1936's The Pinch Singer. This is similar to the initial handling of another African-American Our Gang member, Allen "Farina" Hoskins, who worked in the series during the silent and early sound eras. Despite the change in the Buckwheat character's gender, Billie Thomas's androgynous costuming was not changed until his appearance in the 1936 film Pay as You Exit. This new costuming - overalls, striped shirt, oversized shoes, and a large unkempt afro - was retained for the series until the end. The reason for the change in appearance was so he could portray, in the 1936 Our Gang feature film General Spanky, a five-year-old slave asking men on a riverboat and, subsequently, shoeshine boy Spanky, "You be my master?". In his Classic Movie Guide write-up for the film, Leonard Maltin surmises that "Buckwheat's role as slave in search of a master may displease contemporary audiences." Thomas remained in Our Gang for ten years, appearing in all but one of the shorts, Feed 'em and Weep (due to sickness; fellow child actor Philip Hurlic filled in for him), made from Washee Ironee in 1934 through the series' end in 1944. During the first half of his Our Gang tenure, Thomas's Buckwheat character was often paired with Eugene "Porky" Lee as a tag-along team of "little kids" rallying against (and often outsmarting) the "big kids", George "Spanky" McFarland and Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer. Thomas had a speech impairment as a young child, as did Lee, who became Thomas's friend both on the set and off. The "Buckwheat" and "Porky" characters both became known for their collective garbled dialogue, in particular their catchphrase, "O-tay!" originally uttered by Porky, but soon used by both characters. Thomas remained in Our Gang when the series changed production from Hal Roach Studios to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1938. Thomas was the only cast member to appear in all 52 of the MGM-produced entries and was the only holdover from the Hal Roach era to remain in the series until its end in 1944. By 1940, Thomas had grown out of his speech impairment, and with Lee having been replaced by Robert Blake, Thomas's Buckwheat character was written as an archetypal black youth. He was twelve years old when the final Our Gang film, Dancing Romeo, was completed in November 1943. The character of Buckwheat in later years became synonymous with the derogatory "pickaninny" stereotype. However, the work of Thomas and the other black cast members as actors is credited with helping the cause of race relations by playing alongside white children and going to school with them as equals in a desegregated show during the height of the Jim Crow Era. According to Julia Lee, author of Our Gang: A Racial History of The Little Rascals, Thomas and the others were "considered saviors in many ways" by the black community as the most popular black stars in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s. Later, during the 1950s and 1960s, the NAACP fought against the tired and demeaning racial stereotypes found in some of the Our Gang shorts and moved to have the Little Rascals syndication package taken off the air, settling instead for distributor King World Productions editing the shorts under the NAACP's supervision. Thomas enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954 at the age of 23, and was released from active military service in 1956 decorated with a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. After returning to civilian life, Thomas faced a dilemma shared by many of his co-stars from Our Gang. Though offered many film and stage roles, he had no desire to return to Hollywood as an actor: "After the Army, I wasn't really interested in the hassle of performing," he explained shortly before his death in 1980. "Even the big stars had to chase around and audition; it seemed like a rat race to me, with no security." However, Thomas still enjoyed the film industry at large, and learned the trade of film editing and cutting. He had a successful decades-long career as a film lab technician with the Technicolor corporation, processing negative film reels for motion pictures such as Jaws, and for Metrocolor, processing Logan's Run. Thomas was honored at "Hollywood 80", the second annual meeting of The Sons of the Desert, from July 30 to August 3, 1980. More than 500 Laurel and Hardy fans gathered at the Los Angeles Hilton Hotel. Several days were spent touring famous Hollywood attractions, and then the highlight of the gathering took place in the hotel ballroom. Among those honored on July 31 were Our Gang performers George McFarland, Dorothy DeBorba, Tommy Bond, and Joe Cobb. When Thomas was brought out, he received a spontaneous standing ovation, and was moved to tears. On October 10, 1980, ten weeks after his July 31 appearance at the Hilton, Thomas died of a heart attack in his Los Angeles home at the age of 49. Thomas is buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood. In 1950, Billie had a son whom he also named William Thomas Jr. William Thomas Jr. the younger went on to graduate from California State Northridge University in 1975, then in 1992, created the Buckwheat Memorial Scholarship for students at Northridge in his honor. In 2010, he wrote the book "Otay!" The Billy "Buckwheat" Thomas Story. On November 30, 2012, he died at the age of 62. Eddie Murphy performed a series of Buckwheat sketches on Saturday Night Live during the 1980s when he was a cast member, but Thomas's co-star George McFarland, who played "Spanky" in Little Rascals, made it clear that he hated Murphy's imitations: "I didn't care for them a bit. Mr. Murphy did a very poor imitation. He made Buckwheat into a stereotype that he wasn't, at the expense of the people in his family who are still alive." In 1990, the ABC newsmagazine 20/20 aired a segment featuring a man named Bill English, then a grocery bagger in Arizona, who claimed to be the adult Buckwheat. English's appearance prompted public objections from McFarland, who contacted media outlets following the broadcast to inform them that Thomas - the true Buckwheat - had been dead for ten years. Despite being confronted by McFarland on the television newsmagazine A Current Affair, English, who died four years later at the age of 60, refused to retreat from his claim, maintaining that he had originated the role of Buckwheat, with other actors playing the character only after he had left it. The next week, 20/20 acknowledged on-air that English's claim had been false, and apologized for the interview. The fallout from this incident included the resignation of a 20/20 producer and a negligence lawsuit filed by the son of William Thomas. In July 2023, radio host Delk Kennedy of WKOM in Tennessee referred to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre as "Buckwheat"; when some listeners criticized Kennedy's remarks he disingenuously responded by saying the Buckwheat character was intelligent and his comment was a compliment. Roosevelt: The Fireside Chats: The Great Depression: The Great Depression In The United States: The New Deal: The First New Deal (1933-1934): The Emergency Banking Act (EBA, The Emergency Banking Relief Act): -- Franklin D. Roosevelt delivers his first address to the nation by radio, the first of his famous "fireside chats", a total of thirty evening radio addresses with the American people between 1933 and 1944. In these fireside chats, Roosevelt spoke with familiarity to millions of Americans about the promulgation of the Emergency Banking Act in response to the banking crisis, the recession, New Deal initiatives, and the course of World War II. On radio, he was able to quell rumors and explain his policies. His tone and demeanor communicated self-assurance during times of despair and uncertainty. Roosevelt was regarded as an effective communicator on radio, and the fireside chats kept him in high public regard throughout his presidency. Their introduction was later described as a "revolutionary experiment with a nascent media platform." The series of chats was among the first 50 recordings made part of the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, which noted it as "an influential series of radio broadcasts in which Roosevelt utilized the media to present his programs and ideas directly to the public and thereby redefined the relationship between President Roosevelt and the American people in 1933." March 12, 1933: #BOTD: #HBD! Barbara Feldon, American actress, voice actress, model and beauty, primarily known for her roles on television, most prominently that of Agent 99 on the 1965-1970 sitcom Get Smart and as a member of the cast of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, is #born Barbara Anne Hall in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, seven miles from Pittsburgh and part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. She graduated from Bethel Park High School and trained at Pittsburgh Playhouse. In 1955, she graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) with a bachelor of arts in drama. She was initiated into the Delta Xi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. In 1957, she won the grand prize on The 64K USD Question in the category of William Shakespeare. Feldon studied acting at HB Studio. Following working as a model, Feldon's break came in the form of a popular and much parodied television commercial for "Top Brass", a hair pomade for men by Revlon. Lounging languidly on an animal-print rug, she purred at the camera, addressing the male viewers as "tigers". This led to small roles in television series. In the 1960s, she made appearances on Twelve O'Clock High (season one, episode 24: "End of the Line"), Lorne Greene's Griff, Flipper (season one, episodes 12 and 13: the two-parter "The Lady and the Dolphin") and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (in "The Never-Never Affair" aired spring 1965). In 1964, she appeared with Simon Oakland in the episode "Try to Find a Spy" of CBS's short-lived drama Mr. Broadway. One substantial guest-starring role was opposite George C. Scott in the television drama East Side/West Side (season one, episode 19). It was produced by Talent Associates, which was also developing a TV comedy called Get Smart with two prominent writers, Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. Feldon was cast in this new show as "Agent 99". She starred opposite comedian Don Adams, who portrayed Maxwell Smart, Secret Agent 86. She played the role for the duration of the show's production from 1965 until 1970, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1968 and 1969. The character was unusual for the era, showing a capable woman in a stressful career. Feldon noted, "A lot of women said 99 was a role model for them, because she was smart and always got the right answer." Feldon almost lost her role as 99 because the sponsor of Get Smart was a deodorant soap and she had done a deodorant commercial for Revlon. Feldon was also notably taller than Adams, her male co-star, another rarity for the time. Feldon made guest appearances five times on The Dean Martin Show from 1968 to 1972, singing and dancing, as well as performing in comedy skits. She also appeared as a cast member of the first and second seasons of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. After her starring TV role, she guest-starred in several 1970s television series, including The Carol Burnett Show (Season 3, Episode 17 (1970)), Thriller (Season 1, Episode 1 (1973)), The Name of the Game and McMillan & Wife. Her TV movies include Let's Switch! (1975) with Barbara Eden, and the cult-classic thriller A Vacation in Hell (1979) with Maureen McCormick and Priscilla Barnes. She voiced the character Patti Bear in the 1973 animated television special The Bear Who Slept Through Christmas. Feldon's feature films included Fitzwilly (1967), Smile (1975), and No Deposit, No Return (1976). Her last film to date is 2006's Last Request, a comedy with T.R. Knight, Danny Aiello, and Joe Piscopo. In 1978 she was Bob Eubanks' very first co-host of the annual January 1 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. Feldon reprised her role as "Agent 99" in the made-for-television film Get Smart, Again! (1989) and a short-lived television series also titled Get Smart in 1995. She wrote and provided audio commentaries and introductions for the DVD release of the original Get Smart series in 2006, but did not take part in the 2008 film adaptation that starred Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart. Feldon guest-starred as a former TV spy star on a 1993 episode (season one, episode 20) of Mad About You, as Diane "Spy Girl" Caldwell. She played Lauren Hudson, Sam Malone's annual Valentine's Day love interest in the 1991 Cheers episode "Sam Time Next Year" (S9, EP 19). Feldon's distinctive voice has been heard in numerous TV and radio commercials, as well as film and TV documentaries. She has occasionally acted in off-Broadway plays, but said she is "no longer interested in performing." Feldon is an accomplished writer, and is still actively writing. In 2015, she had two editorial pieces featured in Metropolitan Magazine. She wrote a book, Living Alone and Loving It, in 2003. Feldon has been the actress's last name since she married Lucien Verdoux-Feldon in 1958. They divorced in 1967. In 1968, while living in Los Angeles, she began a 12-year relationship with Get Smart producer Burt Nodella. She does not have any children. Upon ending her relationship, she moved back to New York City where she has lived as of 2020. March 12, 1938: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Road To War: Nazi Germany (The German Reich, The Third Reich): The Anschluss (German: "Annexation", "Joining", Connection") (Anschluss, Anschluss Osterreichs [German: "Annexation Of Austria"]): -- German troops occupy and absorb Austria, which becomes part of Nazi Germany's Third Reich. The idea of an Anschluss, also known as the Anschluss Osterreichs (a united Austria and Germany that would form a "Greater Germany") began after the unification of Germany excluded Austria and the German Austrians from the Prussian-dominated German Empire in 1871. Following the end of World War I with the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in 1918, the newly formed Republic of German-Austria attempted to form a union with Germany, but the Treaty of Saint Germain (September 10, 1919) and the Treaty Of Versailles (28 June 1919) forbade both the union and the continued use of the name "German-Austria" (Deutschosterreich); and stripped Austria of some of its territories, such as the Sudetenland. Prior to the Anschluss, there had been strong support from people of all backgrounds in both Austria and Germany for a union of the two countries. The desire for a union formed an integral part of the Nazi "Heim ins Reich" movement to bring ethnic Germans outside Nazi Germany into Greater Germany. Earlier, Nazi Germany had provided support for the Austrian National Socialist Party (Austrian Nazi Party) in its bid to seize power from Austria's Fatherland Front government. Determined to maintain Austria's independence but under increasing pressure, Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg proclaimed a referendum to be held on March 13, 1938. Adolf Hitler threatened an invasion, which went ahead despite the canceling of the referendum and Schuschnigg's subsequent resignation. On March 12, 1938, the German Wehrmacht entered Austria and was greeted with great enthusiasm. A plebiscite held on 10 April officially ratified Austria's annexation to the Reich. March 12, 1945: #BOTD: Sammy The Bull Gravano, American former mobster who became underboss of the Gambino crime family, is #born Salvatore Gravano in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn to Sicilian immagrants Giorlando "Gerry" and Caterina "Kay" Gravano, the youngest of five children, having two older sisters and two siblings who died before he was born. As the underboss of the Gambino crime family, Gravano played a major role in prosecuting John Gotti, the crime family's boss, by agreeing to testify as a government witness against him and other mobsters in a deal in which he confessed to involvement in 19 murders. Originally an associate for the Colombo crime family, and later for the Brooklyn faction of the Gambino family, Gravano was part of the group that conspired to murder Gambino boss Paul Castellano in 1985. Gravano played a key role in planning and executing Castellano's murder, along with John Gotti, Angelo Ruggiero, Frank DeCicco, and Joseph Armone. Soon after Castellano's murder, Gotti elevated Gravano to become an official captain after Salvatore "Toddo" Aurelio stepped down, a position Gravano held until 1987 when he became consigliere. In 1988 he became underboss, a position he held at the time he became a government witness. In 1991, Gravano agreed to turn state's evidence and testify for the prosecution against Gotti after hearing the boss making several disparaging and untrue remarks about Gravano on a wiretap that implicated them both in several murders. At the time, Gravano was the highest-ranking member of the Five Families to break his blood oath and cooperate with the government. As a result of his testimonies, Gotti and Frank LoCascio were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in 1992. In 1994, a federal judge sentenced Gravano to five years in prison; however, since Gravano had already served four years, the sentence amounted to less than one year. He was released early and entered the U.S. federal Witness Protection Program in Colorado, but left the program in 1995 after 8 months and went to Arizona with family. In 1997, Gravano was consulted several times for the biographical book about his life, Underboss by author Peter Maas. In February 2000, Gravano and nearly 40 other ring members-including his ex-wife Debra, daughter Karen and son Gerard-were arrested on federal and state drug charges. In 2001, Gravano and his son, Gerard, were indicted on mirror charges with the federal government. In 2002 Gravano was sentenced in New York to twenty years in prison. A month later, he was also sentenced in Arizona to nineteen years in prison to run concurrently. Additionally, Gravano was sentenced to lifetime supervised release and a 100K USD fine. He was released in September 2017. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/gacrfaammado.html

March 12, 1947: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Truman Doctrine: -- President Harry S. Truman first announces The Truman Doctrine to Congress, an American foreign policy initiative with the stated purpose to counter Soviet geopolitical expansion. It is considered the beginning of The Cold War. The Truman Doctrine was that was further developed on July 12, 1948 when he pledged to oppose the communist rebellions in Greece during The Greek Civil War and Soviet demands from Turkey during The Turkish Straits crisis. Direct American military force was usually not involved, but Congress appropriated financial aid to support the economies and militaries of Greece and Turkey. More generally, the Truman Doctrine implied American support for other nations allegedly threatened by Soviet communism. The Truman Doctrine became the foundation of American foreign policy, and led, in 1949, to the formation of NATO, a military alliance that is still in effect. Historians often use Truman's speech to date the start of the Cold War. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/harry-s-truman-days-of-decision-dvd.html

March 12, 1964: The American Civil Rights Movement: Black Power: The Black Power Movement (Black Liberation Movement): The Counterculture Of The 1960s: Malcolm X: Speeches By Malcolm X: Malcolm X's A Declaration Of Independence: -- Malcolm X issues "A Declaration Of Independence" from the Nation Of Islam in a condensed form of his March 8, 1964 New York City press conference: "Because 1964 threatens to be a very explosive year on the racial front, and because I myself intend to be very active in every phase of the American Negro struggle for human rights, I have called this press conference this morning in order to clarify my own position in the struggle-especially in regard to politics and nonviolence. I am and always will be a Muslim. My religion is Islam. I still believe that Mr. Muhammad's analysis of the problem is the most realistic, and that his solution is the best one. This means that I too believe the best solution is complete separation, with our people going back home, to our own African homeland. But separation back to Africa is still a long-range program, and while it is yet to materialize, 22 million of our people who are still here in America need better food, clothing, housing, education and jobs right now. Mr. Muhammad's program does point us back homeward, but it also contains within it what we could and should be doing to help solve many of our own problems while we are still here. Internal differences within the Nation of Islam forced me out of it. I did not leave of my own free will. But now that it has happened, I intend to make the most of it. Now that I have more independence of action, I intend to use a more flexible approach toward working with others to get a solution to this problem. I do not pretend to be a divine man, but I do believe in divine guidance, divine power, and in the fulfillment of divine prophecy. I am not educated, nor am I an expert in any particular field-but I am sincere, and my sincerity is my credential. I'm not out to fight other Negro leaders or organizations. We must find a common approach, a common solution, to a common problem. As of this minute, I've forgotten everything bad that the other leaders have said about me, and I pray they can also forget the many bad things I've said about them. The problem facing our people here in America is bigger than all other personal or organizational differences. Therefore, as leaders, we must stop worrying about the threat that we seem to think we pose to each other's personal prestige, and concentrate our united efforts toward solving the unending hurt that is being done daily to our people here in America. I am going to organize and head a new mosque in New York City, known as the Muslim Mosque Incorporated. This gives us a religious base, and the spiritual force necessary to rid our people of the vices that destroy the moral fiber of our community. Our political philosophy will be black nationalism. Our economic and social philosophy will be black nationalism. Our cultural emphasis will be black nationalism. Many of our people aren't religiously inclined, so the Muslim Mosque Incorporated, will be organized in such manner to provide for the active participation of all Negroes in our political, economic, and social programs, despite their religious or non-religious beliefs. The political philosophy of black nationalism means: we must control the politics and the politicians of our community. They must no longer take orders from outside forces. We will organize, and sweep out of office all Negro politicians who are puppets for the outside forces. Our accent will be upon youth: we need new ideas, new methods, new approaches. We will call upon young students of political science throughout the nation to help us. We will encourage these young students to launch their own independent study, and then give us their analysis and their suggestions. We are completely disenchanted with the old, adult, established politicians. We want to see some new faces-more militant faces. Concerning the 1964 elections: we will keep our plans on this a secret until a later date-but we don't intend for our people to be the victims of a political sellout again in 1964. The Muslim Mosque Incorporated, will remain wide open for ideas and financial aid from all quarters. Whites can help us, but they can't join us. There can be no black-white unity until there is first some black unity. There can be no workers' solidarity until there is first some racial solidarity. We cannot think of uniting with others, until after we have first united among ourselves. We cannot think of being acceptable to others until we have first proven acceptable to ourselves. One can't unite bananas with scattered leaves. Concerning nonviolence: it is criminal to teach a man not to defend himself when he is the constant victim of brutal attacks. It is legal and lawful to own a shotgun or a rifle. We believe in obeying the law. In areas where our people are the constant victims of brutality, and the government seems unable or unwilling to protect them, we should form rifle clubs that can be used to defend our lives and our property in times of emergency, such as happened last year in Birmingham; Plaquemine, Louisiana; Cambridge, Maryland; and Danville, Virginia. When our people are being bitten by dogs, they are within their rights to kill those dogs. We should be peaceful, law-abiding-but the time has come for the American Negro to fight back in self-defense whenever and wherever he is being unjustly and unlawfully attacked. If the government thinks I am wrong for saying this, then let the government start doing its job." March 12: National Plant A Flower Day: -- Flowers make us an infinitely nicer and happier bunch! We love how they're just meant to bloom - no questions asked. The flower's approach to life is worth emulating! Not only do they bring us joy, but there's a flower for virtually every mood. Whether expressing grief, love, gratitude, or appreciation, flowers say it best when words fail us. So let's spread the love and plant more flowers this National Plant a Flower Day. Flowers have changed the face of the earth, quite literally, ever since they made an appearance in the Cretaceous period over 145 million years ago. Before flowers, the world was abundant in ferns and conifers - an endless expanse of green idyll. Thanks to insects and dinosaurs plowing their way across, flowers diversified rapidly. The explosion of plant varieties and color cascaded into the birth of several plant families we know today. Flowering plants are vital to existence. They're food sources that provide humans and animals the sustenance we need to survive. More than anything, flowers have an uplifting quality that captures the imagination. Many flowers bloom just for a short period, usually in spring or early summer. Although short-lived, few things compare to the beauty of flowers in full bloom. Perhaps their transient yet incomparable beauty inspired the symbolic meanings of flowers across various world cultures. Across civilizations, flowers have retained certain myths and symbolism. Their fragility has come to represent death or new life. Sometimes they represent gods and goddesses too. But, there's no denying how flowers in full bloom are a universal expression of joy. During the late 1800s in Europe, a new concept around flowers became popular. These stunning blooms became a way to represent people's feelings. Communicating through flower arrangements helped articulate the unsaid. Soon, codebooks to decipher the language of flowers would make communication easier. For example, a field clover meant, "When can I see you again?" A red rose petal meant "Yes." Green flowers signified the receiver's heart was made of stone! The days of complex flower codes may be long gone, but flowers continue to bring joy and meaning to our lives. We may never know who came up with National Plant A Flower Day. The real question isn't "why?" but "why not?" https://store.earthstation1.com/san-francisco-good-times-dvd-underground-newspaper.html

March 12: World Glaucoma Day: -- This is an important day that seeks to raise awareness about the group of eye diseases known as glaucoma. The day is part of a week of raising awareness about this disease and ensuring that it is caught early. Early detection of glaucoma improves the chances of stopping or at least slowing the disease down with appropriate treatments. The blindness caused by glaucoma is irreversible, but if caught early, the disease can be treated and people will not have to endure the difficulties of blindness when it is preventable. This day is observed worldwide as part of the week set aside to raise awareness and eliminate blindness caused by glaucoma. Glaucoma is the name of several eye diseases that can cause vision loss by damaging the optic nerve. Often the diseases develop slowly and don't cause any pain, which makes it easy to ignore till it's too late. Blindness caused by glaucoma is irreversible. However, the disease is treatable if caught early. Damage caused to the optic nerve by glaucoma can be treated to halt the progression of the disease or, at the very least, slow it down. While there are some causes of glaucoma that have a sudden onset, most of the time, these diseases develop gradually and can be caught in time to prevent blindness. The leading cause of glaucoma is a buildup of fluid that causes an increase in pressure in the eye. Glaucoma disease is caused when the aqueous humor - a natural fluid produced by the eye - fails to drain out naturally from the eye. Usually, the fluid drains out of the eye and is replaced with fresh aqueous humor, which the eye produces constantly. However, if something is wrong with the drainage angle, then the fluid will be retained in the eye, and over time, the fluid buildup will increase the pressure on the optic nerve. March 12, 1920: The Aftermath Of World War I: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars): Political Violence In Germany (1918-1933): The Kapp Putsch (Tthe Kapp-Luttwitz Putsch): -- The Marinebrigade Ehrhardt, a Free Corps (Freikorps) group of around 6,000 men formed by Captain (Korvettenkapitan) Hermann Ehrhardt in the Aftermath Of World War I, is ordered to march on Berlin, beginning The Kapp Putsch, also known as the Kapp-Luttwitz Putsch after its leaders, German nationalist and political activist Wolfgang Kapp, and German General Walther von Luttwitz, aimed to undo the German Revolution Of 1918-1919, overthrow the Weimar Republic and establish a right-wing autocratic government in its place. That evening, Ehrhardt ordered his brigade to march into Berlin, to "ruthlessly break any resistance" and to occupy the centre of the city with the government buildings. The Brigade, sporting swastikas on their helmets and vehicles, started off towards Berlin at around 10:00 pm. At 6:25 am they reached the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate) , where it was met by Luttwitz, German General Erich Ludendorff, Kapp and their followers. Shortly thereafter, Kapp's men moved into the Reichskanzlei (Reich Chancellery). Supported by a battalion of regular Reichswehr, they occupied the government quarter. The coup was supported by parts of the Reichswehr (military) and other conservative, nationalist and monarchist factions. The legitimate German government was forced to flee the city until the coup failed on March 17, four days after it had begun, when large sections of the German population followed a call by the government to join a general strike. Most civil servants refused to cooperate with Kapp and his allies. Despite its failure, the putsch had significant consequences for the future of the Weimar Republic. It was the cause of the left-wing Ruhr Uprising of March 1920, which despite it being in support of the government's general strike was suppressed by military force due to the uprising's subversion by communists and other socialists in the Ruhr, who had previously laid plans for "winning political power by the dictatorship of the proletariat". The goverment's forceful suppression of The Ruhr Uprising while dealing leniently with those behind the Kapp Putsch polarized the electorate, resulting in a shift in the majority in the Reichstag in the 1920 German Federal Election of June 6, 1920, where in an election with 79.2% turnout the Social Democratic Party lost over a third of its seats, though it remained the largest party in the Reichstag. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-road-to-war-dvd-set-all-8-tv-shows-4-dis84.html

March 12, 1936: #DOTD: #RIP: David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty, English Royal Navy Admiral Of The Fleet (b. January 17, 1871) #dies at around 1 am in London, England, aged 65, sick with influenza after suffering from heart failure. Beatty's old commander Admiral John Jellicoe died on November 19, 1935, and Beatty defied doctors' orders and left his bed to act as a pallbearer, saying, "What will the Navy say if I fail to attend Jellicoe's funeral?" He was so obviously ill that, as the funeral procession passed up Fleet Street, a bystander sent a glass of brandy out to him. Two months later, he also insisted on attending the funeral of King George V on January 28, 1936. Both these acts hastened his own death. At Beatty's funeral (*ES1-MO note: where?) his coffin was draped in the Union Flag flown by his flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth in 1919. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Cosmo Lang, said "In him something of the spirit of Nelson seemed to have come back". The Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, called in the House of Commons for a public memorial to Beatty to be erected, but no action was taken until after the Second World War, when busts of Beatty and Jellicoe were unveiled in Trafalgar Square on Trafalgar Day, October 21, 1948. Beatty had requested in his will that he wanted to be buried next to his wife Ethel at Dingley Church, Northamptonshire, England: however he was actually buried at St Paul's Cathedral and therefore the double grave at Dingley Church contains only his wife's body. David Beatty was born David Richard Beatty into an Anglo-Irish family at Howbeck Lodge in the parish of Stapeley, near Nantwich, Cheshire, England. He served in the Mahdist War and then the response to the Boxer Rebellion. Thereafter he commanded the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, a tactically indecisive engagement after which his aggressive approach was contrasted with the caution of his commander Admiral Sir John Jellicoe. He is remembered for his comment at Jutland that "There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today", after two of his ships exploded. Later in the war he succeeded Jellicoe as Commander in Chief of the Grand Fleet, in which capacity he received the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet at the end of the war. He then followed Jellicoe's path a second time, serving as First Sea Lord: a position that Beatty held longer (7 years 9 months) than any other First Sea Lord in history. While First Sea Lord, he was involved in negotiating the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 in which it was agreed that the United States, Britain and Japan should set their navies in a ratio of 5:5:3, with France and Italy maintaining smaller ratio fleets of 1.75 each. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-great-war-dvd-set-1964-wwi-tv-series-26-shows-1964266.html

March 12, 1925: #DOTD: #RIP: Sun Yat-Sen, Chinese physician, writer, philosopher, politician, calligrapher and revolutionary, known as the "Father of the Nation" in the Republic Of China (ROC) and the "forerunner of democratic revolution" in the People's Republic Of China (PRC), first president and founding father of the Republic Of China (b. November 12, 1866) #dies at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Peking, Republic Of China at the age of 58. Contemporary reports in The New York Times, Time, and the Chinese newspaper Qun Qiang Bao all reported the cause of death as liver cancer, based on the observation of the surgeon who operated on Sun, the head of the Department of Surgery, Adrian S. Taylor. He was operated on by Taylor on January 26, 1925, and thereafter his condition was treated with radium at the hospital. Sun survived the initial ten-day post-operative healing period, but on February 18, against the advice of Sun's doctors, he was transferred to the Kuomintang (KMT) headquarters and treated with traditional Chinese medicine instead, and he died some three weeks later. By pure chance, in May 2016, an American pathologist named Rolf F. Barth was visiting the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou when he noticed a faded copy of the original autopsy report on display. The autopsy was performed immediately after Sun's death by James Cash, a pathologist at PUMCH. Based on a tissue sample, Cash concluded that the cause of death was not liver cancer, but rather an adenocarcinoma in the gallbladder that had metastasized to the liver. From the time of Sun's death until the appearance of Barth's report in the Chinese Journal of Cancer in September 2016, the true cause of death of Sun Yat-Sen was not reported in any English-language publication. Even in Chinese-language sources, it only appeared in one non-medical online report in 2013. Immediately following Sun's death, his body then was preserved in mineral oil and taken to the Temple of Azure Clouds, a Buddhist shrine in the Western Hills a few miles outside of Beijing. He left a short political will, "The Will Of The Prime Minister", penned by Wang Jingwei, which had a widespread influence in the subsequent development of the Republic of China and Taiwan. In 1926, construction began on a majestic mausoleum at the foot of the second peak of Purple Mountain in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China, and this was completed in the spring of 1929. On June 1, 1929, Sun's remains were moved from Beijing and interred in the Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum. Sun did not live to see his party consolidate its power over the country during the 1926 Northern Expedition, a military campaign launched by the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) of the Kuomintang (KMT) led by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek against the Beiyang government, which was the internationally recognized legitimate Chinese government at that time, and against other regional warlords. The purpose of the campaign was to reunify China, which had become fragmented in the aftermath of the Revolution of 1911. His KMT party, which formed a fragile alliance with the Communists, split into two factions after his death: nationalist and communist. Sun's chief legacy resides in his developing of the political philosophy known as the Three Principles of the People: 1) nationalism (Han Chinese nationalism: independence from imperialist domination - taking back power from the Manchurian Qing dynasty), 2) democracy, and 3) the people's livelihood (just society). Sun Yat-Sen was born Sun Te-ming was born to Sun Dacheng and Madame Yang in the village of Cuiheng, Xiangshan County (now Zhongshan City), Canton Province (now Guangdong). He had a cultural background of Hakka and Cantonese. His father owned very little land and worked as a tailor in Macau and as a journeyman and a porter. After finishing primary education, he moved to Honolulu in the Kingdom of Hawaii, where he lived a comfortable life of modest wealth supported by his elder brother Sun Mei. Sun Yat-Sen played an instrumental role in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty (the last imperial dynasty of China) during the years leading up to the Xinhai Revolution, also known as the Chinese Revolution or the Revolution of 1911. He was appointed to serve as Provisional President of the Republic Of China when it was founded in 1912. He later co-founded the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party of China), serving as its first leader. Sun was a uniting figure in post-Imperial China, and he remains unique among 20th-century Chinese politicians for being widely revered amongst the people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Although Sun is considered to be one of the greatest leaders of modern China, his political life was one of constant struggle and frequent exile. After the success of the revolution and the Han Chinese regaining power after 268 years of Qing dynasty rule, he quickly resigned from his post as President of the newly founded Republic Of China to Yuan Shikai, and led successive revolutionary governments as a challenge to the warlords who controlled much of the nation. https://store.earthstation1.com/china-in-revolution-19111949-dvd-2-part-tv-documenta191119492.html

March 12, 1955: #DOTD: #RIP: Charlie Parker, nicknamed Yardbird and Bird, highly influential African American saxophonist virtuoso, composer and jazz soloist, pioneer and leading figure of bebop, a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic technique and advanced harmonies, one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century (b. August 29, 1920) #dies in the suite of his friend and patron Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter at the Stanhope Hotel in New York City, while watching The Dorsey Brothers' Stage Show on television. The official causes of death were lobar pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer, but Parker also had an advanced case of cirrhosis and had suffered a heart attack. The coroner who performed his autopsy mistakenly estimated Parker's 34-year-old body to be between 50 and 60 years of age. Charlie Parker was born Charles Parker Jr. at 852 Freeman Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas, and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, near Westport and later, in high school, near 15th and Olive St., to Charles Parker Sr. and Adelaide "Addie" Bailey, who was of mixed Choctaw and African American background. Charlie Parker was a blazingly fast virtuoso, and he introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. His tone ranged from clean and penetrating to sweet and somber. Parker acquired the nickname "Yardbird" early in his career. This, and the shortened form "Bird", continued to be used for the rest of his life, inspiring the titles of a number of Parker compositions, such as "Yardbird Suite", "Ornithology", "Bird Gets the Worm", and "Bird of Paradise". Parker was an icon for the hipster subculture and later the Beat Generation, personifying the jazz musician as an uncompromising artist and intellectual rather than just an entertainer. https://store.earthstation1.com/benny-carter-symphony-in-riffs-dvd-burt-lancaster.html

Soon after his death, the Royal Academy of Music acquired the Yehudi Menuhin Archive, which includes sheet music marked up for performance, correspondence, news articles and photographs relating to Menuhin, autographed musical manuscripts, and several portraits of Paganini. Baron Menuhin, OM KBE was an American-born violinist and conductor who spent most of his performing career in Britain. He is widely considered one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. He played the Soil Stradivarius of 1714, considered one of the finest violins made by Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari of Cremona (1644-1737), one of two Stradivari violins named after Belgian industrialist Amedee Soil. A product of Stradivari's golden period, it is considered one of his finest. The Soil was acquired by Yehudi Menuhin in 1950 and in 1986 by its current owner Itzhak Perlman, who played this instrument while recording the Cinema Serenade with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 1997. This instrument is characterized by its brilliant red varnish and a two-piece maple back with the flames of the grain joined, descending from the edges toward the center. March 12, 1977: #DOTD: #RIP: Basil Brown, self-taught archaeologist and astronomer who in 1939 discovered and excavated a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon ship burial at Sutton Hoo in what curator of the British Museum described as "one of the most important archaeological discoveries of all time" (b. January 22, 1888) #dies of pneumonia at his home "Cambria" in Rickinghall, Suffolk, England. He was cremated at Ipswich Crematorium in Ipswich, Suffolk, England on March 17, and his ashes were given to his widow Dorothy. He was born Basil John Wait Brown in Bucklesham, east of Ipswich, to George Brown (1863-1932) and Charlotte Wait (c.1854-1931), daughter of John Wait of Great Barrington, Gloucestershire. His father was a farmer, wheelwright and agent for the Royal Insurance Company. Although described as an amateur archaeologist, Brown's career as a paid excavation employee for a provincial museum spanned more than thirty years. In July 1937 English landowner Edith Pretty paid Basil Brown to find out if anything lay beneath the mounds on her property. Promising finds were made, and Brown returned in the summer of 1939 for further work on the project. He soon unearthed The Sutton Hoo Burial, the remains of an enormous burial site containing what was later identified as a 7th-century Saxon ship, which may have been the last resting-place of King Raedwald of East Anglia. The famed Sutton Hoo Helmet, and the other artefacts from the site were determined the be legally the property of Edith Pretty, as she was owner of the land on which they were found. She donated them to the British Museum, where the helmet is on permanent display in Room 41. The Sutton Hoo Helmet is a decorated and ornate Anglo-Saxon helmet found during a 1939 excavation of the Sutton Hoo ship-burial. It was buried around 625 and is widely believed to have belonged to King Raedwald of East Anglia; its elaborate decoration may have given it a secondary function akin to a crown. The helmet was both a functional piece of armour that would have offered considerable protection if ever used in warfare, and a decorative, prestigious piece of extravagant metalwork. It is described as "the most iconic object" from "one of the most spectacular archaeological discoveries ever made," and perhaps the most important known Anglo-Saxon artefact. The visage contains eyebrows, a nose, and moustache, creating the image of a man joined by a dragon's head to become a soaring dragon with outstretched wings. It has become a symbol of the Early Middle Ages and "of Archaeology in general." It was excavated as hundreds of rusted fragments, and was first displayed following an initial reconstruction in 1945-46, and then in its present form after a second reconstruction in 1970-71. Sutton Hoo, at Sutton near Woodbridge, in Suffolk, England, is the site of two early medieval cemeteries, from the 6th to 7th centuries. Archaeologists have been excavating the area since the 1930s. One cemetery had an undisturbed ship burial with a wealth of Anglo-Saxon artefacts of art-historical and archaeological significance; most of these objects are now held by the British Museum in London. The site is in the care of the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty. Historians who specialise in the early middle ages regard Sutton Hoo as important because it illuminates a period that is on the margin between myth, legend, and historical documentation. Use of the site culminated when Raedwald, ruler of the Kingdom of East Anglia, held senior power among the English people and played a dynamic if ambiguous part in the establishment of Christian rulership in England. Scholars believe that Raedwald is most likely the person buried in the ship. Findings at the site have been important in understanding the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of East Anglia and the early Anglo-Saxon period. The ship burial is one of the most magnificent archaeological finds in England because of its size, completeness, far-reaching connections, the quality and beauty of its contents, and the profound interest of the burial ritual itself. The initial excavation was privately sponsored by the landowner. When the significance of the find became apparent, national experts took over. Subsequent archaeological campaigns, particularly in the late 1960s and late 1980s, have explored the wider site and many other individual burials. The most significant artefacts from the ship burial, displayed in the British Museum, are those found in the burial chamber, including a suite of metalwork dress fittings in gold and gems, a ceremonial helmet, shield and sword, a lyre, and many pieces of silver plate from the Byzantine Empire. The ship burial has, from the time of its discovery, prompted comparisons with the world described in the heroic Old English poem Beowulf, which is set in Gotaland (now southern Sweden). That region, especially Vendel, has close archaeological parallels to the Sutton Hoo ship burial, both in its general form and in details of the military equipment in the burial. Although the ship burial commands the greatest attention from tourists, the two cemeteries also have rich historical meaning because of their position in relation to the River Deben estuary and the North Sea, and their relation to other sites in the immediate neighbourhood. Of the two grave fields at Sutton Hoo, the Sutton Hoo cemetery had long been known to exist because it consists of a group of approximately 20 earthen Anglo-Saxon burial mounds that rise slightly above the horizon of the hill-spur when viewed from the opposite bank. The other, the newer burial ground, is situated on a second hill-spur close to the present Exhibition Hall, about 500 metres upstream of the first. It was discovered and partially explored in 2000 during preliminary work for the construction of the hall. This site also had burials under mounds, but was not known because these mounds had been flattened by agricultural activity. There is a visitor centre with many original and replica artefacts and a reconstruction of the ship burial chamber. The burial field can be toured in the summer months and at weekends and school holidays year-round. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-sutton-hoo-ship-burial-archaeology-artifacts-peoples-dvd-mp4-us4.html
